Construction work on a new wind farm with a planned total capacity of 125 megawatts (MW) began in early 2025 near the city of Cerignola, some 100 kilometres west of Bari. The project consists of 29 wind turbines and, once completed, will generate around 300 gigawatt hours of electricity per year - enough to supply about 140,000 households with renewable energy. The wind farm is scheduled to go online at the end of 2025.
With the start of construction in Cerignola, BKW is taking an important step towards achieving its strategic goals: by 2030, it wants to expand its portfolio by over 600 megawatts of renewable production and reduce emissions in its energy business to net zero by 2040.
Italy as an important location for renewable energy
Italy is one of the core markets for BKW’s energy production, alongside Switzerland, Germany and France. BKW already operates 11 wind farms in the Italian regions of Apulia and Basilicata, with a total installed capacity of 277 MW. In total, BKW operates and maintains over 500 wind turbines in Italy, making a significant contribution to the local supply of renewable electricity.
BKW also on a growth path in Switzerland
The expansion of renewable energy is not limited to foreign markets. BKW also has a substantial pipeline of projects in Switzerland, including the hydropower projects Trift and Grimselsee, the wind power projects Tramelan and Jeanbrenin, the BelpmoosSolar free-field solar power plant, and several alpine photovoltaic plants, particularly in the canton of Bern. To strengthen the Swiss production portfolio and increase the share of renewable electricity, BKW will invest CHF CHF 2 billion by 2030.
