Wind power is a fluctuating energy source. To better integrate the electricity into the energy system, BKW pools the electricity from all wind turbines, forecasts the total production and schedules it for better delivery. The integration of such significant volumes of intermittent production requires technically robust and economically viable trading solutions. This so called «balancing» acts as a connection between the producer and the energy system. BKW provides EMYN with this service for the transition from the end of construction until the wind park is fully integrated into the state subsidy scheme (Feed-in-Tariff (EDF OA)).
Ulrich Baret, Head of Short-Term Energy Solution at BKW Energie France: «We are proud to collaborate with EMYN on this ambitious project. The agreement supports BKW’s strategy <Solutions 2030> by focusing on large-scale renewable technologies.»
Aude Delrue, Commercial Manager at BKW Energie France, adds: «This contract is very technical, as it requires us to deploy our expertise in a demanding offshore environment where operational responsiveness is essential.»
The collaboration between BKW and EMYN underscores the growing momentum of sustainable energy efforts in France and highlights the dedication of both companies to advancing clean energy solutions.
Frédéric Flaus, Project Director at EMYN: «We would like to thank BKW Energie France for this collaboration, which will enable the Yeu-Noirmoutier offshore wind farm to be gradually connected to the electricity grid, with full commissioning scheduled for the end of the year.»
About Éoliennes en Mer Îles d’Yeu et de Noirmoutier
The wind farm Éoliennes en Mer Îles d’Yeu et de Noirmoutier (EMYN), developed by Ocean Winds is a consortium that was selected in 2014 as the winner of the French government’s call for tenders for the construction, installation, and operation of a wind farm off the Vendée coast. It started construction during the summer of 2023.
By the end of 2025, 61 wind turbines will be able to diversify the energy mix of the Vendée and cover the electricity needs of 800,000 people, the equivalent of the department’s population.
The company Éoliennes en Mer Îles d’Yeu et de Noirmoutier is made up of four companies: Ocean Winds, Sumitomo Corporation, Banque des Territoires and Vendee Energie. Ocean Winds is the major shareholder which is a 50-50 joint venture between ENGIE and EDP Renewables that develops, finances, builds and operates offshore wind farms around the world.
