BKW, Flughafen Bern AG and ewb want to build an open-space solar plant on the grounds of Bern Airport. With BelpmoosSolar, energy companies, environmental associations and authorities are demonstrating that the energy transition and nature conservation can be achieved together. As the Federal Council is expected to include part of the site in the inventory of dry grasslands of national importance in autumn 2025, BelpmoosSolar AG is resizing the planned open-space solar plant. The solution found involves reducing the size of the ground-mounted solar plant by around a third of the original plan. This resizing ensures that the valuable biodiversity of the dry meadow remains protected. On an area of 16.5 hectares, up to 28 gigawatt hours of electricity can be generated per year, supplying up to 8,000 households. The winter electricity share is 28 per cent. As a plant of national interest, BelpmoosSolar thus makes an important contribution to the expansion of photovoltaics in Switzerland and to the secure supply of renewable energy.

The open-space solar plant will be built on the fenced-off area of Bern-Belp Airport, on the current grass runways and on agricultural land.
