The comprehensive upgrade has increased the capacity of the solar power station built by BKW in early 2005 from 850 to 1,300 kilowatts. Given optimal solar radiation, this will increase annual production from around 800,000 Kilowatthours (kWh) to 1.2 million kWh, equivalent to the average annual consumption of a small community or approximately 400 households. The new roof areas have a sharper gradient than the ones used in the first construction phase, which will increase power generation by the 8,000 solar modules by 15% at the same efficiency level. As part of the upgrade, the installed roof area was extended by 4'000 m2, from 8'000 m2 to 12'000 m2. Now that the maximum configuration has been achieved, BKW operates the world's largest in-stadium, unsubsidised solar power station. This is consistent with the company's fifteen-year tradition of promoting the use of solar energy, and further reinforces its commitment in the field of new renewable energies.
