Regional heating system planned

District heating in Heimberg-Steffisburg

In partnership with U. Hauenstein Heizung Lüftung Sanitär AG and Wenger Holzbau AG, BKW FMB Energy Ltd (BKW) is planning to implement a wood-fuelled regional heating system in Heimberg-Steffisburg . To this end the partners have founded the company REWAG (Regionaler Wärmeverbund AG Heimberg-Steffisburg), with the aim of strengthening their involvement in the field of new renewable energies. The canton of Berne supports the project. The partners are also aiming to gain the support of the Klimarappen ("Climate Cent") Foundation.

The aim of the regional heating system is to replace heating oil with wood energy in order to produce heat in an ecologically sustainable manner. The energy plant will be constructed on a site in the Töpferweg industrial complex in Heimberg-Steffisburg. Wenger Holzbau AG will be responsible for delivering the wood fuel. The regional heating system is scheduled to go into operation for the forthcoming 2007 heating season, supplying heat to, among others, the "Obere Au" housing scheme constructed by Frutiger AG.
