BKW concludes PPAs for solar power from Italy

The conclusion of three long-term power purchase agreements to promote renewable energy production are part of BKW's new "Solutions 2030" strategy.

BKW has signed two ten-year Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) with Zelestra, a global, multi-technology renewable energy company. This agreement furthers BKW's commitment to the energy transition and aims to avoid up to 14,000 tons of CO2 annually. Those additional PPAs promote the renewable energy production in Italy this year.

The two agreements now concluded between BKW and Zelestra contribute to creating a low-carbon future for Italy. The contracts enable BKW to purchase electricity from two photovoltaic plants located in Apulia and Sicily. The AGV Bellomo plant in Modica, Sicily, has an installed capacity of 9.5 MW and will help avoid 8,592 tons of CO2 annually. The AGV Ginosa in Apulia, with a capacity of 6.5 MW, will avoid approximately 5,654 tons of annual CO2 emissions. The electricity generated by these plants will be managed by BKW and sold to industrial and commercial consumers in Italy.

“We Help Reduce Emissions"

Stefan Sewckow, Head of Energy Markets at BKW said "These two 10-year PPAs in Italy mark a significant milestone in our company’s journey toward delivering on our strategic vision for sustainable growth. By aligning with Italy’s ambitious renewable energy goals, we are reaffirming our commitment to innovation, environmental responsibility, and creating value for our stakeholders. This partnership exemplifies our dedication to being at the forefront of the clean energy transition in Europe."

Martina Nicodemo, Senior Commodity Originator at BKW, expressed enthusiasm about the collaboration: "We are extremely proud of our partnership with Zelestra, which underscores our leadership in PPAs and Italy's importance as a core market."

BKW had already concluded a third PPA in Italy on 5 December. This contract is with the German-Austrian solar developer CCE for a 42-megawatt solar plant in the Italian region of Lazio. The three agreements signed in December underline BKW's strong position in the Italian market for clean energy.

PPAs as a Key Pillar of BKW’s Strategy

The conclusion of this long-term renewable energy purchase agreement in Italy aligns with the "Solutions 2030" strategy, which BKW presented on November 8, 2024. The strategy envisions significant growth for BKW in the area of long-term power purchase and supply agreements.
