BKW acquires stake in biomass power plant

Renewable energies

BKW FMB Energy Ltd (BKW) and Holz- & Stockrecycling AG (HSR) are entering into a partnership for biomass utilisation. The two companies each have a 50% stake in the biomass power plant of Biomassekraftwerk Otelfingen AG. In future the plant will be managed by BKW subsidiary sol-E Suisse AG, and its yield is to be increased further.
The biomass power plant in Otelfingen uses waste wood to generate energy and has been in operation since 2003. With an installed capacity of 2.6 MW, the plant is certified to the "naturemade star" ecological standard. The wood-fired power plant generates 12 million kilowatt-hours of electricity a year, covering the consumption of around 3,400 households. In the medium term, investments are planned with a view to increasing the plant's yield. The newly founded joint venture company will be responsible for operating the power plant and marketing the energy produced. HSR also operates a waste wood processing plant on the site of the wood-fired power plant, and will supply the raw material for production of CO2-neutral electricity and heat. The partners have agreed not to disclose the financial aspects of the holding.
