BKW strengthens trading in renewable energy

Majority interest in Wind Energy Trading WET AG

BKW has taken a majority stake in Wind Energy Trading WET AG (WET). The Lausanne-based company specialises in the direct marketing of electricity from renewable energy sources. Direct marketing is playing an increasingly significant role in this area due to the strong growth in renewable energy production capacity and its increasing integration into the energy market. BKW’s investment in WET strengthens its position in the field of renewable energy trading.

The energy market is changing as production of decentralised and renewable energy continues to grow. Whereas this energy was originally marketed by transmission system operators, the new renewable energies are becoming increasingly integrated into the market. In direct marketing, a producer sells its electricity to traders, who handle its sale on the wholesale market. In intraday trading, in which electricity for the current day is traded, this occurs at 15-minute intervals. Optimal position management requires an in-depth understanding of the market and of modern trading technology. WET specialises in position management for decentralised energy production. The company was founded in 2012 and provides services for a steadily growing portfolio of wind and solar parks, which currently stands at around 3,500 megawatts across Germany and Austria – or almost 10% of all Germany’s onshore wind farms. Next year, the company will also begin direct marketing operations in France. ‘WET complements our existing trading competences so that we are now optimally positioned on the growth market of direct marketing,’ says Urs Springer, Head of Trading & Origination at BKW. WET’s co-CEO Julian Göhler is also delighted: ‘With BKW as a strong partner, we can continue to drive forward our strategy of swift and successful growth’. WET will remain an independent company under the leadership of the two current co-CEOs.
