Production record in 2009 - 100 billion Kilowatthours since going into operation
In 2009 the Mühleberg nuclear power plant (KKM) of BKW FMB Energy Ltd (BKW) recorded gross production of 3,092 million Kilowatt-hours - its highest ever production volume since going into operation. Since the beginning of the 1970s the KKM has generated more than 100 billion Kilowatthours of carbon-neutral electricity, thereby saving more than 30 million tonnes in CO2 compared to power generation by a modern gas-fired combined-cycle power plant. The plant has achieved this record annual result and passed the 100-billion kWh mark thanks to its good condition and exceptionally robust capacity. Thanks to ongoing upgrading of plant components, the KKM is well equipped for long-term operation.
In 2009 the Mühleberg nuclear power plant reliably fed electricity to the grid for 8,020 hours i.e. for 91.6 percent of the year. With the exception of the scheduled overhaul in August and a
short-term shutdown in September, operations were uninterrupted. In 2009 the KKM achieved its highest ever annual electricity production volume (2008: 3,088 million kWh).
The 2009 revision focused on important renovations and maintenance work as well as extensive repeat tests. By replacing the process computer and data recording system which manages and visualises
all operating data, the plant now boasts state-of-the-art information technology. In accordance with the renovation and maintenance plans, work was also carried out on a feedwater pump, the main
cooling water line outlet and one of the two generators,
BKW aims to continue ensuring the safe operation of the KKM through continual plant upgrades and regular, thorough system checks. The plant will continue to make an important contribution to energy
security in north-western Switzerland.
